Cross Training

Linh called me up this morning, asked if I wanted to go on a run. It was cold and foggy, my favorite running weather, so I said sure and put on a sweater, not knowing where nor how long she wanted to run. I don't run much, and when I do, I run a few miles at most, but Linh's a runner, and she's been training every day for an event coming up soon. After a couple of miles, the weather cleared up and the day ended up being sunshine gorgeous but warm. Crap! Following her, one turn followed another and she ended up taking me on a path to Inspiration Point! If I had known what she was up to, I probably would have slept in (but of course I was planning to bike). The run was a bitch, all uphill, steepest for the first stretch up Spruce, not so bad up Wildcat Canyon. At the top, we couldn't find any water, and not wanting to run all the way down and back, we hitchhiked and got picked up by an off-duty Berkeley Cop. Really nice guy, but got a lesson about how hitchhiking is dangerous. Good run, endorphins kicking in.

"New" Bike

It's been a while since my accident and my wrist has healed. I got a "new" bike to replace my bent french noodle. On a budget, I got a 2000 KHS Aero Comp off Craigslist. The frame is Reynolds 853 steel (I'm little wary of aluminum now), and it's mostly Ultegra 9-speed. The stock crank has been replaced with a Shimano compact, I think Tiagra-grade by the looks of it. The shifters have also been replaced with Tiagra shifters with visual gear-indicators(!). Off the bat, I noticed that they didn't shift as nicely as my previous Ultegra shifters, but the difference is minute. I really like the shift indicator and the redesigned hoods, which are a lot easier on the hands.

Post

The morning after I'm feeling better, but my right wrist is swollen and painful to move. I hope it's not broken, I'm going to get it checked out when I get the chance.

Bike Crash!

Well, I'm short of luck. Right after I had finished installing a new bottom bracket and tuning the derailleurs, I crashed my Vitus--the top and bottom tubes are bent and the fork is completely deformed--unsalvageable, a real mess. It's pretty crazy how soft these old Vitus frames are! I'm relatively okay, I was wearing my helmet, I have some chest pain, an injured knee, and a sprained finger, but other than that, I'm fine. Until I get a new bike, I'm falling back to using my old 80's Lotus Classique, heavy but usable. I'm in the hunt for a new frame! I'm thinking steel now...
